Members of the Irish Red Cross can avail of further training in-service,
provided by Red Cross instructors, and external bodies. The following training
courses are available to members.
Practical First Aid Training
Description; This course is the first step of our training ladder. It
was introduced this year to replace the Basic First Aid Course. It gives
people a course which relies more on the practice of administering First Aid
than the theory behind it. A good basis for any future training.
Intermediate First Aid Training
Description: This course builds upon the skills and knowledge acquired
by members in the Practical First Aid Course. More advanced treatments are
discussed and practiced, as well as more detailed anatomical and physiological
lectures. Casualty simulations are an integral part of the practical component
of this course. The Intermediate course is the main preparation for the EMFR
candidate.
Ambulance Procedures Training
Description: This course introduces members to the workings of an
operational ambulance, including procedures and SOPs, ambulance equipment,
duty organisation and more. It also forms part of the preparation for the EMFR
course.
Basic Life Support Training
Description: This course teaches participants more advanced
resuscitation techniques for adults, children and infants, including foreign
body airway obstruction techniques. The BLS course is also a component of the
preparatory work for EMFR candidates.
Safe Lifting/Patient Handling Training
Description: Manual Handling training teaches members techniques for
safe lifting and moving of patients, and equipment such as stretchers,
carry-chairs etc. The anatomy of the spine, and proper back care are also
covered. All EMFR candidates must have sat a Safe Lifting/Patient Handling
Course.
Emergency Medical First Responder (EMFR) Training
Description: Advanced injuries and conditions, treatments and equipment
are covered in this course, offered to members who wish to progress to
advanced standard, and ultimately Instructor level. All candidates for the
course will have successfully completed a BLS Course, Intermediate First Aid
Course, Ambulance Procedures Course and a Safe Lifting/Patient Handling
Course. Airway management, AED operation, triage, resuscitation, obstetrics,
pharmacology, pain management and more are covered in this modular course,
which has a large emphasis on practical skills.
First Aid Instructor Certification
Description: First Responder members can attend an Instructor training
course, and are then assessed under knowledge and instructing techniques. If
successful, members are then certified as Instructors with the Irish Red
Cross, and may teach Basic, Intermediate and Occupational First Aid, and CPR/BLS
Courses.
AED Instructor Certification
Description: Certified First Aid instructors can attend a 1 day
training course to become AED instructors with the Irish Red Cross. This
entitles them to teach AED courses to members of the Irish Red Cross, and
teach Public Access Defibrillation courses to members of the public.
Critical Incident Stress Debriefing
Description: Post-traumatic stress disorder, and the psychological
effects of resuscitation are discussed, and tips are offered to participants

offered within the Irish Red Cross to members.
