Therapeutic Hand Care:

‘Therapeutic Hand Care – A helping hand to those in need’
The Red Cross Hand Care
Service is provided by volunteers. It consists of a hand massage and manicure,
which is given to long-stay hospital patients, elderly people, people in their
own homes and to those suffering from depression. The relaxing effect of the
massage is itself beneficial, especially if joints are beginning to stiffen or
arthritis is setting in. The manicure is a boost to the morale and the whole
treatment is a way to communicate care through touch. The fact that a Hand Care
Volunteer spends time with a patient can often be the most valuable aspect of
the service - a perhaps rare opportunity for social interaction.
